After a Miami car accident, focus on safety, appropriate medical care, documentation, and understanding insurance requests before signing anything.

The first hours after a car accident can feel disorganized. Focus first on your safety and health, then on preserving information that may help explain what happened.

You do not need to solve an insurance claim at the roadside. A simple record of the crash and the steps you took can help you address the next decisions.

1. Get help and avoid additional danger

Call 911 if someone is injured, there is immediate danger, or emergency help is needed. Follow the directions of emergency responders. Do not step into moving traffic to take photographs or try to move someone who may be seriously injured unless immediate safety requires it.

Report the crash as required. A small amount of visible vehicle damage does not answer every question about injuries or reporting obligations.

2. Seek appropriate medical care

Tell the medical provider accurately what happened and what symptoms you have. If symptoms change afterward, seek appropriate follow-up rather than assuming the initial visit explains everything.

Florida PIP benefits have an important treatment window. Review our medical-bills article for the coverage details, and do not postpone needed care while deciding whether to hire a lawyer.

3. Document what you safely can

Save photographs of the vehicles, road conditions, relevant signs, and visible injuries. Obtain the other driver’s information and witness contacts. Note the time, location, and investigating agency.

If there may be video, record where the camera was located. Footage availability varies, so identifying the source early can be useful. Continue documenting injury changes accurately as they occur.

4. Keep insurance communications organized

Notify your insurer as required by your policy. Keep claim numbers, messages, and letters. Your duties to your own insurer can differ from requests made by the other driver’s insurer.

Before a recorded statement or release, understand what is being requested. Answer accurately and ask questions when you do not know the meaning or scope of a document.

5. Discuss deadlines and next steps

Many Florida car accident negligence lawsuits have a two-year filing period, but other claims and circumstances can have different rules. Reporting a claim to an insurer is not the same as filing a lawsuit.
